Coast to Coast Camel Trek
Shark Bay to Byron Bay - 4750km
It all started back in 2016 when I decided to take a break from the world of Film, TV and Photography and do something different with my life for a short time. I settled on the most random job I could find, working at a camel dairy milking camels! What I wasn’t anticipating was how much I would end up falling in love with these animals, and, what was only going to be a 6 month break from my ‘real job’ turned into six years of chasing camels around Australia and other parts of the world trying to learn all I could. Camels took me to The Flinders Ranges, Lake Eyre and The Tirari Desert, Uluru, Michigan and Texas USA and Rajasthan India.
Through my work with camels, I realised how capable they are in the arid Australian landscape. Being able to carry large loads and go days if not weeks without water, they are the perfect travelling companions if you crave exploring nature on foot in a self-sufficient manner. I had just turned 30, while my friends were beginning to have children and settle down, I longed for something different with my life, to have an adventure that would prove to myself what I was made of. So, I innocently and naively settled upon rather mammoth idea to walk across the width of Australia from Shark Bay WA to Byron Bay NSW with camels. In January 2019 I bought five camels from the wild which I trained to carry my provisions and equipment for the trip.
During 2020 and 2021, my five camels–Jude, Delilah, Charlie, Clayton, Mac and I, walked from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean across Australia’s arid heart. We navigated vast cattle stations, treacherous salt lakes, wild deserts, gibber plains, mountains and finally busy roads. I experienced both hardship and heart rendering beauty, met colourful characters that helped me achieve my goal and learnt the truth of my own strength. In December 2021, after thirteen months on the road, the camels and I dipped our toes in the Pacific Ocean. It was a dream come true!
